HateToHelp Makes a Reader's Hair Look Homeless
We received this story from a reader, Natalie, who was in such shock when we posted a picture of her son, Kai, on TrippingOnWords, that she forgot to wash off the hair dye she had going. Now she needs amateur hair coloring advice. As a last resort, she says we can just send her some of the scarves Lara uses on her five month and going post-shave grow-out.

When I sat down to quickly check my email I was in the midst of soaking up some wash-out hair color to cover up the wonderful skunk-ish looking streaks that my good friend (albeit not a real hairdresser) inflicted on me under the guise of "highlights." Her hair - blonde, my hair - chocolate brown. The bleach that apparently is supposed only "lighten hair a few shades" left me with a mane that looked more like a RockStar wannabe than the subtle tones I was convinced I was going to get.

No worries, I told myself after unveiling the hideous 'do - - nothing a little wash out color can't fix. So I proceeded to buy 2 boxes (thick hair - one box only covers half of my head) of this wonderful shade called Gingerbread. It was more the color I was actually hoping to accompany my dark locks! So I apply the reddish/brownish hair color and decide that while I'm waiting 20 minutes for it to do it's thing, I'll check my email....

.... nothing exciting and nothing worth taking the effort to read - then I had a brilliant thought..."Wonder if TrippingOnWords has a new post since the last time I checked?"....

I suppose in the shock and pure delight of seeing my name up there in neon lights on your blog (it's totally about perspective, you know)... I totally forgot about the 20 minute hair color. No joke. And it suddenly dawns on me that it's now been almost an hour since I put this stuff on my hair and whatever shade of Gingerbread that it was supposed to be has probably come and gone and sent me a postcard!!!

After a good rinse and conditioning (is it just me, or do they never give you enough conditioner in those boxes?!) my skunk streaks are now a blazing shade of mahogany that would make even Pink jealous. Too bad I don't care for mahogany.

Anyone know how to tame the shade a bit – from Mahogany to Gingerbread? Here's hoping for some good hair karma,

At the advice of my sister-in-law I tried washing my hair with dish soap.... a few tips from that experience:

    1) don't use it while in the shower (duh) - dries out your skin so much you'll get all red and flaky within hours. I used my entire bottle of skin moisturizer that day!

    2) have a gallon of conditioner handy, my hair felt like steel wool after I rinsed the soap out of it.

    3) your hair will smell surprisingly fresh for at least 2 days despite going to the gym 2x and not washing it at all (my poor scalp had not seen so much product in all it's life! I had to give it a break for at least 36 hours.)

    4) dish soap does strip colour off much more effectively than regular shampoo - - but given that it's supposed to cut through baked-on greasy food from ovenwear... than I guess that's not too much of a surprise!

I'm still looking for some tips on this as my only option is to wash my hair 48x (and use an entire 2 months supply of shampoo) in one day!

    Hair Still Looking Homeless,
    Natalie

I'm not sure what you can do to get the dye out, and I'd probably suggest re-dying it, but Im guessing you don't want to go bald anytime soon. However, in a small attempt to be more than completely useless, after a good few washings with the dish soap, try putting mayonaisse on it and letting it set on your hair for 1/2 an hour and then shampoo ( it may take 2 or 3 shampoos to get the mayo all out) and it will make your hair really healthy soft, shiny and alive again... ^_^ It's the best deep moistureizing treatment ever, I swear! I know it sounds gross, but ti works so much better than a crap load of conditioner... If I find anymore tips, I'll post 'em!

After so much stuff, I'd really recommend laying off your hair for a while. First order of the day is to get some super mild shampoo (baby shampoo is generally an inexpensive option) and then some HEAVY DUTY conditioner.

Then, visit a good stylist at a salon. If your hair consultant is worth his/her salt, there'll be some decent advice on what to do.

If I were you, I'd consider cutting it really short a la Lara and letting it grow out again. You can spike it up with hair wax (less damaging than gel or mousse) when you go out on weekends or for events (think Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby who still looked like a million dollars).

Everest Transverse trek combines the Base Camp and Gokyo Lake treks with two additional trails to the east and west of the central region. The eastern arm adds a trek up to Chhukung for two acclimatization nights (add a walk to Chhukung Ri or to the Island Peak Base Camp for views over and beyond the Lhotse and Ama Dablam glaciers. Then conquer the Kongma La (5 535m), en-route to Lobuche and Everest Base Camp.

Mount Everest three passes trek has a vast network of ancient trails links villages and farming communities, who have little contact with larger centre to the south. For centuries these trails have been trodden by the locals, porters, mule and yak caravans. To walk these trails is to experience the true essence of Nepal.

In the Khumbu region, the trails will offer you some of the Himalaya’s most dramatic landscapes including views of four of Nepal’s eight 8 000m peaks. In recent times local communities have embraced the needs of trekkers so that you can now follow upgraded trails, from tea house to tea house, under deep blue skies below these peaks and their vassal neighbors.

Three pass trek in Everest the western arm, after a rest day at Gokyo, adds the staggering ascent to the Renjo La, some four hours above the lake to staggering views of the valley and glacier below and numerous high ridges crowned by the Everest Group. The descent to Marulung faces new dramatic landscapes. Below the village, the trail joins an old Tibetan salt route and continues to Thame and then back to Namche Bazaar.

This epic journey will take you over three of the world’s highest passes and while they are not difficult routes, their altitudes, each over 5 300m, plus the possibility of poor weather conditions, requires thorough acclimatization and slow, steady ascents that make for three long and demanding trekking days. A dream project for serious adventure travellers to tackle at least once in a lifetime! Spring and Autumn are the best season to trek, though Mountain Mart Trek-adventure team make it happen four season comfortably.

    Annapurna Transverse and Sanctuary Trek

In Oct/ Nov 2010 we did the Annapurna Circuit and Sanctuary trek with Prem Panta of Mountain Mart Trekking - what an amazing trip! Prem came highly recommended by other South African hikers and we totally support their recommendation! Other hikers referred to us as the \"rock stars\" as he looked after us so well!

Prem is an excellent guide, he tailor made a trip for four of us based on the areas we wanted to go to. He gave great recommendations and is very knowledgable, he is easy going & flexible and we highly recommend him to other independent travellers who would prefer to trek in the Himalayas with a guide.

The Annapurna circuit is incredibly beautiful and has diverse scenary - it is 23 days if you include the Sanctuary up to ABC which we loved! If your time is short, there is there is a possiblitiy to take a jeep from Muktinah to Marpha - but it would be a pity to miss the old town of Kagbeni.

All in all an incredible experience and we look forward to our next Nepal adventure with Prem to Everest Base camp in November/ December 2012.
