Gokyo Cho La Pass trek is famously known as the ‘high altitude trek’ of the Everest region. Beyond Lukla and Namche Bazaar, the trail first leads, over three days, to the lakes and village of Gokyo, west of Everest’s base camp. This summer-grazing Sherpa village is situated on the slopes of Ngozumpa’s glacial moraine, below a ring of spectacular peaks. The lodges on this portion of the trek are usually less crowded than on the Everest Base Camp “tourist route”.

Above the Gokyo village, from Gokyo Ri, one of the most dramatic panoramas in the Khumbu region offers you Cho Oyu (and the ice ridge to Ghyachung Kang), Everest, Lhotse and Makalu: four 8 000m peaks towering above innumerable ‘minor’ peaks. More of Everest itself is visible, though from a slightly greater distance, than from Kala Patthar above Gorak Shep. The view down to the Ngozumpa glacier, the longest in Nepal, is awe inspiring.

Cho La pass trekking in Everest region crosses the glacier to Thangnak. A long day’s tough trek then leads over the Cho La (5367m) to join the Everest Base Camp route at Lobuche. From here, the trail leads to Gorak Shep: the last outpost on the trail to Base Camp, some two hours on. Depending on the time of year, this can be a difficult walk and also very cold. Behind Gorak Shep is Kala Patthar (5 550m), the brown bump attached to Pumori that offers a stiff upward walk, rewarded by excellent peak-views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and the huge Khumbu Glacier.

The return journey gradually loses altitude and the arid scenery is replaced by the return of vegetation and terraced farmlands.
